Defence of the North   Leave a comment

Campaign two scenarios four and five.

Burning of the Mirkwood

Razgush sends his forces into the woods with orders to burn down the five central tall trees.
Tauriel is ready to defend the forest.
Razgush is victorious as the final tree is felled.

This scenario seemed impossible for the elves. We even allowed only one roll per tree per turn to bring a tree down. With the orcs having troops that move faster and the greater numbers we wondered what they could do otherwise.

The finale. The battle under the trees. The good side are even awarded Grimbeorn as a result of their previous victories.

Thranduil and the Ellie’s.
The spider queen lurks in the shadows.
Orcs advance in the centre whilst the faster denizens advance on the flanks. Elven archery kills about five wargs and orcs as the lines close. Orc archery and spear throwing has no effect at all.
Grimbeorn is staying behind the copse guarding the left flank against the spider queen.
Deadly spiders.
After heavy fighting the orcs on 5e elf right flank are beginning to outflank the defenders . The elves are beginning to get surrounded. The bear is being held at bay by the queen aided by her bats and spiders on the other flank. In the centre Tauriel and the ranger captain are slain by Razgush and his forces. Thranduil and his guardsmen are undefeated. However the count is now 18 elves lost to 15 orcs.
Thranduil
Grimbeorn
As the elven line began to collapse we declared an evil victory.

This was a tough scenario for the elves. A victory for evil in the second campaign of defence of the north.

Next will be campaign one as I am busily painting up some black dragon warriors and have some proxy Rhunish war drakes on order.

Rome ! Civil war and barbaric hordes.

Phil , Bruce , Mike and Darryl.

Mike and Bruce suffered from barbarians and minor kings . Phil and Darryl dealt with the northern tribes especially benefiting from limes in Pannonia and Gallia for Phil .

Then Mike attacked Britannia so Phil stole Hispania . Finally Phil made the move on italia becoming the first emperor and grabbing the extra victory points just before the end .

Saturday 20 August. Britannia.   Leave a comment

Bruce Red . Mike blue. Phil Green and Darryl yellow. We played Britannia . It was fun to get the old board game out again . Green did well because of the Welsh despite losing both the Jutes and the Caledonians from attacks by Red .

We stopped at turn 13 and green was in the lead by then.

Legendary X files   Leave a comment

Mike brought round his Legendary game. We played as characters from the tv series . First time round we solved the clues but lost just before the big reveal when an event caused my character to kill Mike’s.

Second attempt we got completely wiped out without achieving anything useful and then my character died all of a sudden in one attack .

Lord of the Rings. Defence of the North.   Leave a comment

Bruce came round and we played through three scenarios from the new scenario book for the MESBG. Campaign Two. Mainly because we wanted to use Elves and Beornings for the Good Team after the hobbits had such a hard time previously. Also because I am behind in painting up the crazy new Easterling figures from GW which are needed for Campaign 1.

These scenarios track the endeavours of Razgush (my team) as he attempts to stop the Elves of Mirkwood from sending aid to their allies in the other campaigns.

First Scenario the Escape of Gollum.

Gollum is being held prisoner by the Elves of Mirkwood. A party of rangers are attacked by Orcs and Gollum sees his chance to get away!

The Green Wood invaded by Orcs and Wargs.
The Rangers of Mirkwood. Their initial shooting turn was very poor allowing Evil to close quickly with the Orc Captain using Heroic March.
The remaining Rangers close around Gollum as the orcs attack supported by Spears.

Outcome:

Seeing things are going badly one Elf stays in reserve and attacks Gollum! The Rangers have Knife Fighting so can fend off foes if outnumbered. Also the Elf Captain proves unstoppable with his high Fight skill. The Wargs in particular prove easy to kill.
Gollum takes his chance and flees as the Rangers fall becoming outnumbered. However they soon despatch some of their foes and take up the chase.
Now the Orcs are outnumbered but Gollum has escaped in the confusion!

Gollum escaped. Victory for Evil. Very close scenario.

Second Scenario: Denizens of Evil.

The Dark Denizens of the Mirkwood. Orcs on a hunting party set out to subdue them. Who will prevail!?
Razgush leads his Orcs forward into the dark terrifying woods. They are terrified.
Wargs are proxied as Giant Spiders for this scenario. Razgush has attempted to subdue the Queen but she is too strong, his Orcs are too scared to charge (red failed courage markers) and his Fight skill is reduced by the annoying bats.
The Giant Spiders surround the Orcs as Razgush himself is defeated by the Spider Queen.

Outcome:

Razgush and his cowardly orcs become spider food. Victory for Good. Not that close. Evil could hardly charge the Terror causing Spiders never mind get a hit on the Queen.

Third Scenario: The Attack on the Beornings.

The evil Orcs have attacked a group of Beornings mustering in a clearing. Grimbeorn however is enraged by this and races to the rescue.

The Beornings gather at the meeting place and the Orcs emerge from the woods. Proxies again as mine are on the painting bench!
The Orcs charge into the fray. Not quite realising just how powerful these Beornings are! Initially they make headway but the Beornings are Burly and hit hard with a good Fight skill and Strength, plus Two Hits!
Grimbeorn arrives on the Second Turn rolling a Six! Just as the Beornings looked like they were going to be surrounded and destroyed.
Grimbeorn tears through the Orcs and the remaining Beornings just manage to hang on long enough to claim Victory!

Outcome: A close scenario. Evil managed to get Good down to 4 Beornings with 1 wound each but the Bear form Grimbeorn literally wiped the floor with them before they could achieve the final kill. Victory for Good.

Review: Fantastic fun. Great scenarios with lots of theme and mainly well balanced. Recommended. Next time the Elves of Mirkwood come out to fight Razgush and his army.

Rangers of Shadowdeep into the Temple of Madness   Leave a comment

Link and Gwalchmai pick up their questing once again. This time our level was 8 so perfect for the different difficulty of the supplement.

Link and Birdo fight their way to the treasure . At this moment Emilia reveals the runes on the pillar triggering the trapdoor . This is the exit and two ghouls guard the way . Our heroes soon dealt with the ghouls and grabbing the two treasure tokens thanks to Gwalchmai’s teleport spell made for the exit .

Next was the pit of ghouls.

Gwalchmai and Link swung across the pit using the ropes and worked on the wheels . They despatched the ghouls trying to interfere.

In the pit the companions fought against the horde of ghouls . Birdo did try to swing across but fell flat on his face and needed healing.

Finally the doors opened and our heroes made it out from the pit of ghouls .
