Saturday November 25th: Gloomhaven   2 comments

Phil the Spellweaver, Mike the Cragheart, Alex the Tinkerer and Darryl the Mindthief make up the Inglorious Few who have set out upon adventure in Gloomhaven.

In the first scenario our heroes barely survived and just scraped through having been persuaded to recover a lost scroll by a Merchant named Jekserah. The party struggled with card management and became exhausted when the monsters in the last room kept healing. On the road to the barrow the party met up with some wild wolves and were injured by thorn bushes.

Next they delved deeper and slew the bandit leader in his lair. This was despite being cursed. The Tinkerer and the Cragheart amassed some gold. In the city the Mindthief chased a pickpocket back to its Vermling lair and retrieved a flea infested shawl putting a stop to the rogues crime spree. The Tinkerer donated to the church and received a blessing. The players other than the impoverished spellweaver all bought some armour which would come in useful in the next adventure. They chose to work for Jekserah again despite the Spellweaver’s misgivings and headed out to the Dagger Woods in order to deal with Inox Raiders who had been attacking her convoys.

On the road they cleverly avoided a landslide. They then attacked the Inox. The Mindthief opened two side doors whilst the main group headed for the cave. The spellweaver exhausted herself in order to reach the chest in the penultimate turn but only discovered an item pattern useful to a warrior. The Tinkerer kept the Cragheart fighting with useful healing and dealt damage with his own stacks. The Spellweaver did a lot of multiple attacks that cleared the way. The Mindthief as usual dealt out powerful melee attacks. The Cragheart and the Tinkerer especially gathered up all the gold coins.  The Cragheart’s helmet deflected a mighty attack from an elite archer.

Somewhat shaken by their actions our heroes returned to the City.

There they did some shopping and fixed the Tavern Lights. The Tinkerer yet again donated to the Church. The Tinkerer reached Level 2 and gained a new card for their draw deck and hand.

They decided to investigate Merchants warehouse at the behest of the City guard. The Tinkerer and the Spellweaver managing to persuade the Mindthief and the Cragheart not to go after the diamond despite the lure of more money.  Remember also we still have the Crypt of the Damned open to investigate.

Saturday 18 November: pandemic legacy with slight spoilers below   Leave a comment

Bruce the scientist, Phil the colonel, Alex the generalist and Mike the quarantine specialist played through August. They had to find a virologist having found the immunologist last time. This was a narrow search window in faded territory. They just made it but had to cancel an epidemic card using their last yellow bonus card.

This time it was Phil’s turn to sit out for September. Darryl took over the colonel. Something special happened in September which was so typical for Darryl and was quite hilarious and really set the team back. However incredibly they managed to pull through by Alex and Darryl voluntarily taking scars to avoid something and were thus just able to get through without triggering a further out break which would have caused the game to end with a failure. Alex used the dispatcher for our first time who proved quite useful so he might get another try out.

So onwards onto October and maybe the Virologist will get a turn.

A couple of games of Citadels.  Was fun.  Lost both times and was robbed and assassinated and pillaged a lot.

We played the big battle of Edessa as mentioned in the earlier blog post below. Here is how it went.  Click on the gallery to read the captions and the battle report.

So in the end things turned round for the Romans after Valerians’s capture and the loss of the centre general.  Darryl’s cautious preservation of the Praetorian Legion and its commander Successianus plus the heroic left flank Roman cavalry managed to turn things round and seize an unlikely but close victory.

Perhaps Succesianus was able to sack Edessa and negotiate the release of Valerian? Or maybe simply being able to retreat back into Roman territory was enough now for the Romans,  leaving their hapless Emperor in the Persian clutches for ever more?

Was certainly a fun battle.  The new rout rules prevented the Roman guard cavalry from becoming demoralised and the new no rally in zone of control had an effect too.  It stops the romans using detached generals to continuously rally in the face of the enemy but it also meant that disordered forces fought on for ages  with very little effect on each other.

A good game and thanks to Mike and Alex with their Persians and to Darryl for stabilising the Romans for Phil when all seemed lost.

Played our first two games of Gloomhaven. Went well so have now painted the six starting character figures.  So far Phil has played as the Spellweaver, Mike the Cragheart, Alex the Tinkerer and Darryl the Mindthief.
