The latest played games are as follows. Mike Phil Alex Darryl and bruce played doctor who. Quite a challenging game with dice and random monsters. The team seemed to be winning with Mike in the lead until Phil had a run of bad results so tried to win an easy fight on earth thus losing out because of yet another time locked challenge. This brought on the third Dalek to earth and it was all over for everyone!
Phil. Darryl and Andy played Conan. Monolith Conan’s skirmish board game in Khitai. We continued from where the heroes left off over a year ago. This time Conan and the heroes raced up the tower closely followed by the raging inferno they had created in the basement. Conan and the evasive thief climbed up the tower to confront the wizard whilst the swordsman fought his way upstairs and kept the guards distracted. With one mighty attack Andy’s Conan beheaded the wizard and his guard thus securing a route to victory. The ever evasive thief grabbed the trophy and raced passed the blocking guardsmen then leapt from the battlements into the pond below. This secured a victory for the players. Alas time ran out for the swordsman as the raging inferno raced up the tower but Conan was able to slay the blocking guard then race up the tower and throw himself off the ramparts just as the tower burst entirely aflame and began to collapse. Very cinematic and lots of fun.
Painted and based the Earl of Essex’s regiment of foot. Ready to join his army in defence of Parliament.

Assemble. I hate this part because of the weapon hands being so awkward to glue onto the arms. Lots of separate pieces. I find I get superglued but the figures never do. There is no way I can pin and drill the little hands to make them secure for gaming purposes like I would do say for example with a larger figure such as a troll.
I decided to spray base black because of the armour.
The bases took ages because I kept changing my mind as to going grey or earth brown. In the end I started over all the grey and added brown then put army painter dark tone over it. Now it was all grey again. Not too sure how I feel about the larger rocks I used as ballast as opposed to my usual sand, though am happy with the slate pieces. Next went over again dry brushing wet brushing with graveyard earth and then a dry white subtle highlight.
I painted the goblin skin areas with skull white. Then I added a flesh wash reikland flesh shade. Next I added a mix of flesh and yellow and white, then a highlight of light grey.

Subsequently I have added tin bits to the metal, I will add rhinox brown to the leather areas then I will highlight metal with metal and various browns to the leather areas. Mainly bestial Brown, occasionally vermin Brown .

So onto the final stages. Some received a nuln oil wash to the armour. Not all as it seemed to dull the presence of the tin bits. Rust applied to weapons and bleached bone to the bone picks. Orange to the eyes then gryphons sepia wash to eyes and boils. Some autumn grass added to the bases. This was to give the effect of goblins descending the scree slopes to join the battle of the five armies.

Spray undercoat white. Add dwarf flesh. Orange for the coat colour. The base one solar orange. Aedeptus grey trousers. Then bleached bone for the bags colours and cuffs. Then various browns for the leather. Then the hair and hats rhinos hide. Armour in black. Then brown army painter strong tone wash. Next bring out highlights with blazing orange and brown where required. Finish off faces, hands with dwarf flesh. Correct mistakes.
Ensign gets red instead of orange and orange sash and feathers. Chain mail armour then nuln oil wash. Then highlights with original.
Testors dullcote applied. Too many incidents with frosting with other spray varnishes to want to use any other.
Fix to base and fit pikes. Mix brown and Windsor and newton base gel and apply to base. I decided to go for a 60×60 pike block base with ensign leading push of pike pistol at the ready.

Finally graveyard earth drybrush then autumn flock added to base.

Painting 28mm ECW
I decided to paint up a 28mm Warlord Plastics Regiment I had in my to do list. Mainly this was due to being enthused by King and Parliament rules from to the Strongest. We played these the other day and they gave a great game. Also my collection was slightly lacking a Parliament Regiment compared to my Royalist forces. So which to paint? Well it has to be something from the early or mid-war with a distinctive uniform. So you can guess I went for Lord Brooke’s Regiment of Foote with their distinctive Purple Coats which I have always found interesting. With their unique purple coats they would fit in nicely with my Trained Bande being raised in 1642 and having formed part of the Earl of Essex’s army. They fought at Edgehill and then at Brentford against Prince Rupert (who along with his Regiment of Bluecoate Foote forms part of my Royalist Force).
Painting Guide
I do not have too much time now for painting and they sat quite a while betwixt stages so I needed a quick way of getting them done and to the table in a good state.
I used games workshop paints. The old ones for the most part as I have a collection of these in a grey games workshop carrier I bought once upon a time when I had some money!
I base coated them black with GW spray. I could maybe have used purple or brown.
I then painted in the flesh using the high pigment base tallarn flesh.
I then did the purple coats liche purple.
Next on to the leather and brown parts with a mix of different ones. Brown , high pigment browns mixed to be darker or plain black.
Trosers either a high pigment grey darkened with black or a dark or red brown.
Shoes left black. Socks either a grey dark or light mid brown (dun).
Next I added metal colours usually gun metal or citadel chainmail or boltgun metal. Occasionally I used dwarf bronze on a hilt or a buckle.
Officers got buff coats using a high pigment yellow brown mixed with brown.
Facings and lace coloured in with bleached bone.
Hair brown or black and hats a mix of browns. Woollen hats I did grey and hats just in purple.
This is now the mid stage. As you can see I am deliberately limiting my palette to create a distinctive uniform regiment look with enough variety to fit the English civil war. The officer and ensign I did black and purple with feathers in blue and red again to limit the colours and try to look suitably parliamentarian.
Next everything gets a good coat of army painter strong tone painted from the bottle ink wash (not the dunk one).
Finally everything gets finished off and highlighted. So a second coat of highlighting using liche purple on the coats. I decided this time not to do a third purple highlight for time which I often do, however this is a regiment and did not seem necessary. Black for the armour. Dwarf flesh for the skin. Various browns for satchels, “apostles” , straps and so on.
Next on to basing. Always difficult to choose how to bae figures with various rules out there. I stuck to my 20mm square per figure for both the foote and pike. Sometimes I put the pike closer but with these figures that would not have worked any way. I decided to go for big bases to fit six figures on each, thus it would be 60mm x 40mm and that is looking fine plus it fits with the number of figures. I can get two companies for my Regiment of Foote using For King and Parliament in this way for example. Or one big wide regiment using a different rule set.
Here they are ready for the next stage. Better photos to follow hopefully when that’s completed.

Mike and Alex joined Phil and Darryl to continue the cooperative campaign using the FFG app. This has been going really well and we will be on our fifth scenario next time.
In our last scenario Darryl’s Medic Robot got defeated again but the team won through.
Played 2 really good games of Star Wars Imperial Assault: Legends of the Alliance yesterday. That’s the app driven fully co-operative version. We took 4 heroes in case two others want to join in another time. Highly enjoyable and a great way to play an existing game in a different manner. First scenario we held off the Imperials against all the odds. Our Medic Android got defeated but we survived. Next we rescued some hostages.
We also did CCN Coruna which was loads of fun too. My French overcome with British with British Guard Grenadiers where the stars of the show. I managed to secure the right flank to win and my Heavy Cavalry just watched from afar on the far left hemmed in by the British Artillery.
Since my last post what have we played? We went to Michaels to play an old favourite not tried in a long time. Descent version one. Was fun but we only really made it to the first giant brother . However we were well armed so probably would have finished okay with a bit of luck.
Then we played Mike’s new History of the World in Five epochs. Phil led from the first which is never good so paid for it in the last round. Michael however held back and got a 68 point huge score with France following Spain immediately to win by a mile.
This week Mike, Alex, Phil and Darryl reprised their roles for another Gloomhaven adventure. This time they were off to the Lair of the Necromancer and a level 2 adventure. First room went too easily but good cards were squandered then the second room was a bust as the open door and then I will stun or muddle the monsters for you plan failed miserably when the night demons used the handy dark magic we created to turn invisible. Thus the door was blocked by the tinkerer of Alex who suffered two rounds of attacks before we could help. Nasty.
This meant giving up on the chest and going all out for the Boss. It looked bad at first as they crowded the door and the Boss just kept creating more elite undead but then Mike jumped into the room creating an opening and we were able to get some big hits from Darryl’s Mind thief onto the Boss plus some poison. Then it was just a matter of time and our heroes won through.
Next we go under the city to visit the sewers.
Bruce’s Scoundrel jointed Phil’s Spellweaver, Alex’s Tinkerer and Mike’s Cragheart.
They headed towards the Shrine of Strength. On the way they met a man who needed some leaves. Enough said about that.
Bravely they entered Shrine. This was set up a normal level for the group which was one so a reasonable challenge. Blasting their way through the first and second room with Bruce leading the way supported by Phil’s healing it was soon time for Alex to open the doors to the north and south corridors. Alex leapt bravely into the fray and was soon pulled into close quarters by the stone golem and pounded into exhaustion by two harrowers. By the time Mike arrived there was no way to save him. Phil and Bruce fared better in the other corridor but Phil had to use his cards to heal and blast the foes and found that he was too exhausted after reaching the pressure plate to be of further use. Still that gave Mike time to finish off the enemies in his corridor and reach the final plate thus opening the final doors. Then it was a matter of bruce distracting the last two golems whilst Mike opened the final chest and completed the dungeon.
This was helpful as our heroes were all able to level up. A beneficial city event saw them purchase a curious gear from a vermlimg sewer merchant. Mike purchased a fine ring of skulls which shall come in very useful at the next opportunity. The heroes identified some curious runes in the shrine and using the key provided were able to decipher a cryptic message which might come in useful at some point but possibly not.
The next scenario will see our heroes pursue Jekserah to the necromancers lair!
Phil has swapped his cards around and is aiming to actually make it to the end this time. Too many lost cards in his hand and both crackling air and aid from ether did not really work out at all. However the summons definitely had a great game this time boosted no doubt by the stronger cards taken as perks over time.
