We are playing sword of rome over vassal. So far its taken two sessions and Mike is winning with the Etruscans and Samnites. Darryls Carthage keeps sailing to Etruscan aid then sailing back, whilst the Greeks wait readying their strength and the Gauls move about plundering the Samnites. Rome tried to attack Etruscans but keeps getting distracted and lost a VP to the Samnites and Gauls combining so is behind on points.

Some tree trunk counters for gaming, useful as markers or when figures move through trees.

Painting update Teutonic Knights Leave a comment
Fireforge Teutonic Knights and Battleflag decals.

Assembly was straight forward . Standard for multipart plastics. Time consuming but allows for variety. Glued the second figure for the multi bases on sticks but used my glue gun which proved to be a mistake when it came to removing them.
First all painted white. Then white-light grey citadel contrast paint for the cloth later highlighted with white. Chain mail to the metal washed with black. Dark wood brown to weapons and horses. Some horses black. Snake brown to the leather.
Next the figures are varnished and the decals applied. Very time consuming as each one needs to be cut out and applied individually. Varnished again. Figures added to bases and base mix applied. Leather brown Vallejo paint to the ground and washed with army painter dark tone then grass tufts and yellow flowers added with pva glue.
Saturday – Sword of Rome Leave a comment
Phil, Alex, Two Mikes and Darryl played sword of Rome via vassal. The Etruscans and Gauls allied against Rome but were held back though this pinned Rome down whilst Greece and Carthage sparred lightly in Sicily. we finished after two turns with everyone at six vp. Rome being too scared to pull ahead without the manpower to defend a lead.

Painting with citadel contrast paints . Ran out of the bespoke spray so spray painted with grey light then flesh to skin and grey to or red to the coats and cloaks . Snake brown to leather and dark wood brown to trousers .
Chain mail to the metal then black washed . Based and then basing mix added which was painted grey then dark wood washed then highlighted with none white . Slate was added before base mix and painted with black wash then grey . Tufts of grass added .
These will add to my late romans and Romano british armies providing some garrison units for sieges and battles too .

Painting guide rohan house and pallisade Leave a comment
Rohan House
Model assembled, quite fiddly roof. Some gaps in thatched roof- Mr white putty.
Model sprayed with new citadel grey. Because of the white putty it was not really possible to do the roof using citadel contrast so this was painted yellow, then washed with sepia brown then dry brushed with yellow and bone and then bone.
The house was citadel contrast painted in wood brown. Then this was heavily dry brushed with lighter shades of grey to grey white and white for the horses. Same for the fences and barrels. Rust added to the iron that got obliterated by dry brush on the barrels. Details picked out on horse tack. The door was picked out with iron details then nuln oil wash and the arch with bronze plus the ties on the sides. Nuln oil added to tone down.
Nice model, would get it again if I needed more Rohan houses, if I was rich I would get three and mash them into a big house.
Photo to follow.

Pallisade
I wanted to go for a dark frost bitten theme with preserved timbers. So I used the suggested black-grey theme. Easy enough to put together though the gate was a bit fiddly and I lost a piece. Also I did not realise the posts under the walkway are each specific to their exact position. I cut them all out and glued them on only to realise that they had to go in a set order as each is slightly different.
Next I sprayed it grey with citadel base and then used black contrast paint. I used alot and of course can’t order any more right now.
Then I used grey and then grey white and then white on the timbers. The metal parts got iron and then a bit of rust. Same for the watch tower but that is lighter grey-white at its top.
Photo in post below
Good model that can be used by any dark ages or any other similar force that requires a pallisade. Not just for Rohan and the Saxons and Celts liked their horse motifs too. Nothing to stop people going for brown but judging by how quickly timber rots in my back garden fence if put in the ground I think the stained black timber effect will add some durability!
